Wordy Wednesday

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

To the guy in the gym - just because you walk around the equipment and sometimes stop to sit on it… doesn’t mean you’re actually spending quality time in the gym. And it’s really annoying when you walk in and out every few minutes, letting the doors slam as you enter or leave. And you look really stupid when you plug your headphones into an elliptical machine to listen to the news… but you’re not actually using the elliptical - you’re just standing beside it.

Because I like lists and I’ve had a difficult time coming up with a good list lately…
I’m “borrowing” Maura’s list on places she has lived over her lifetime. When she said she’d lived in 13 places, I thought - wow! I don’t think I’ve lived in that many places! But, after I count… I’m not far off.

 1. My parents’ house; Rex, GA (May 1978 - April 1992)
 2. My parents’ rental house; Columbia, TN (April 1992 - August 1992)
 3. My parents’ new house; Columbia, TN (August 1992 - August 1998)
 4. ETSU college dorm, junior year - Clement Hall, Room 103 with Vanessa
 5. ETSU college dorm, senior year - Clement Hall, Room 101 alone
 6. ETSU college dorm, summer 2000 - Carter Hall (alone)
 7. ETSU college dorm, 2nd senior year - Luntsford Hall, third floor with Nikki (and cat)
 8. “Round House” - summer 2001 - Nicole’s apartment (with rabbit)
 9. Carrville rental house - with Nicole - Johnson City, TN (and cat and rabbit)
10. My first apartment alone - Bristol, TN (and cat)
11. SB’s condominium - Kingsport, TN (with dog and cat-briefly)
12. Mine and SB’s house - Marietta, GA (with dog)

You should try this too - it’s a nice “thinking exercise.” :)
(Nicole posted her list - way to go on meeting my challenge!)

On the Fritz

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

The internet at work has been on the fritz for the past few days… it usually starts acting up about 11:30 each day… and it’s been a real pain in the tail. My online radio stays up, and my gmail inbox stays up… but my gmail chat will go down, and every other site I could possibly need/want to visit during the day will be unavailable. Not having the internet really makes for a boring day!

To top it off, the Scrabulous app has been pulled from Facebook indefinitely.
Steven plays scrabble on the “official” Scrabulous site, but I can’t play in “real time.” I enjoy the freedom of Facebook- playing my word, then waiting on the next person… no time limits… it’s much easier for me to play this way! I hope the lawsuits, etc will be solved soon and hopefully the Scrabulous app will return.

Yesterday I received a package from my parents- NINE keychains- all from their journey out west. I now have keychains from Montana, Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone, Glacier, Canada (Alberta) and the St. Louis Arch! It’s just so exciting to get cool stuff in the mail!
Vacation Countdown: 30 days

Simply Saturday

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

Sometimes I am amazed by people that know so much about computers, the web, coding, etc… and again, I am amazed by the people that know nothing- or very little- about computers. I’m not talking about your grandmother not knowing computers… I’m talking about people my age.
There is so much out there that I wish I knew, yet I don’t have the time… or don’t even know where to begin the learning process. Most of my knowledge has come from trial and error - mostly error… and like I said in my last post… the upgrades made to my site probably could have been done in half the time it took me.
A college acquaintance of mine recently joined facebook- she sent me a friend request, which I accepted. She didn’t have a picture up yet… and sent me a message saying she was new to all this social networking- and had no idea how to upload pics or anything - but she would figure it all out eventually.
I am floored that after being out of college for over seven years… working in the real world… that she hasn’t had more computer experience! Am I nuts?! Am I expecting too much?

My category titles in Wordpress are gone. I’m not sure why. The categories are still listed, with the number of posts filed under each category… but there are no titles. I’m not sure how to fix this… then again, I don’t know that I care that they are gone. I could never come up with good titles for my categories anyway.

Since this seems to be turning into a post mostly about computers, I have another question.
Sometimes when you do a search (google or otherwise) on someone you know, or knew from your past… you get tons of results. Some will lead you to the person you’re looking for… and some are just people with the same name.
Of course, most women change their names when they get married… so that always presents some difficulty in a search (unless you know who they married). It’s always easier when the person has a unique name, or a unique spelling of their name - generally you can find them pretty easily.
My name doesn’t provide anything exciting in the way of a search, but there are results for my name. But there are some people I’ve searched for - and there isn’t a single hit for their name. So that makes me wonder… are they computer-challenged… or have they just taken extreme care to be sure their name isn’t lurking out there on the web? I just don’t understand how you can just not exist, basically.

I’ll close with a reply to a comment I received:
Nicole - Love the new layout!! You need to start posting more!!
Here’s your challenge, Nicole - have a new post up on your site by July 30 - which will be your two-month anniversary of not posting. :)

Upgrades

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Next time I decide to do any upgrades to my site… remind me to pay a professional. Please.
It took me several hours to do what someone else could have done in mere minutes (I think).
Alas, I am now the proud owner of Wordpress Version 2.6.
